Lowball Poker

Lowball is the only game played at the Oaks which does not utilize a House Dealer. Players in the game are responsible for dealing the cards and the deal is passed, clockwise, to the next player at the completion of each hand.

  • Lowball draw poker is a form of five card draw poker in which the object of the game is to win the wagering pool with the lowest ranking poker hand attainable.
  • The game is played with a 53 card deck including the Joker. The Joker acts as a wild card and counts as the lowest missing card in the player’s hand. Aces count as low, with straights and flushes ignored. The BEST hand is A, 2, 3, 4, 5.
  • The game is played with a blind structure that is customarily based on the betting limit of the game. Lowball can be played with from 2 to 8 players.
  • At the start of play, players are dealt five single cards in turn. The players act in turn, either discarding their hand (folding) or calling or raising the initial bet, until everyone has acted on their hand and placed an equal amount of bets in the pot.
  • Like high draw poker, players then act on their hand, discarding any unwanted cards in an effort to make their best (lowest) hand.
  • After everyone has had an opportunity to draw cards, another round of betting occurs.
  • Players still in action after the second betting round show down their hands and the pot is awarded to the player with the five lowest ranking cards.
